Self-Help Conference:
The Forum at Carle,
The theme of this year’s conference is Mental Health Recovery: Creating Caring Communities. The keynote speakers include Nanette Larson who is the Director of Recovery Support Services at the Illinois Department of Human Service Division of Mental Health. Nanette knows recovery from a personal and professional perspective. She will address the foundational principles of recovery and host an afternoon session on the application of these principles into a recovery plan. Rev. Jackson Day, Pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Maryland and a consultant for health care and mental illness within the Baltimore-Washington conference of the United Methodist Church will also share his personal and pastoral experience working through post traumatic stress disorder. Rev. Day has co-authored a training curriculum, “Risking Connection in Faith Communities” to help pastoral staff support trauma survivors. He has served as a chaplain for a combat division in the Vietnam War and has led healing retreats for combat veterans. Jason Gray, composer, musician and singer will also provide original music about healing and hope during the conference. (details below)
The conference will address such topics as peer groups for specific needs including young adults, women experiencing postpartum depression, persons who are incarcerated, and survivors of suicide to name a few. The afternoon workshops will be a chance to apply recovery concepts using the visual arts, drumming, writing and through development of personal plans of recovery.
The conference is open to persons in support groups, professionals working in the field of mental health and the general public. A special invitation is also extended to ministers and pastoral staff and volunteers. Please save the date and spread the word by posting the enclosed flyer developed by graphic artist and early memory loss support group facilitator, Ginny Sims. Registration information will be mailed in August and posted on the Self-Help Center website.
Jason Gray, musician,
to perform Oct. 3rd at Faith United Methodist Church, Champaign and
at the Self-Help Conference on Oct. 4th
Singer/songwriter, Jason Gray, has been described as a person who “lays his heart on the line through his music and stands up for ‘the little people’”. His label debut, All the Lovely Losers (Centricity) includes songs that are filled with hope and inspiration for the challenges we all face in our everyday life.
Jason knows from personal experience what it means to live with challenges. He grew up in an abusive home, has coped with depression and has a stuttering disability but can sing beautifully. Today he is a witness for the less fortunate and is working to help AIDS orphans in Africa. The Friday, October 3rd concert will benefit Cunningham Children’s Home. Jason is also generously donating his time and musical talent in his performance at the Self-Help Conference on Saturday, Oct. 4th.
The Friday, October 3rd concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 W. Prospect Ave., Champaign. The ticket price is $10. Tickets can be purchased online at www.iTickets.com or locally at Berean Bookstore, 2023 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign or at Family Service. This concert is being supported by Carle Foundation Hospital and is a collaborative effort of Family Service Self-Help Center, Faith United Methodist Church and Cunningham Children’s Home.
